: 3–4 Before each stage, the player chooses one of four different protagonists to use: Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool.Unlike the previous game, this game does not have multiplayer functionality.
Just like in most Mario games, the game is viewed as a 2D side-scroller and features Mario on a quest to save Princess Toadstool.
Kamek first appears in Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island and its remake Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 as one of the main antagonists in the game.
